Unable to update plugins/themes after wordpress upgrade

After updating to WordPress 4.6 none of the plugins or themes will update, instead they error out with the same error but substitute the theme for plugin when doing plugins.

Unpacking the update…
Installing the latest version…
Removing the old version of the theme…
Theme update failed. An error occurred while updating Twenty Fifteen: Could not create directory. /public_html/wp-content/themes/twentyfifteen/"

I have nothing changed on server otherthan updating wordpress

I checked whether its a permission issue but I got the same error.

Hello Stark,

It seems the conflict issues with WordPress version upgrade. If 'Twenty Fifteen' is the theme you are currently using then you can try to switch to another theme, delete the one with the issue and then reinstall it. Worked for me. Not sure why themes and plugins can’t be updated after the 4.6 upgrade.
